Just days before Chiara Smith was supposed to perform in a school talent competition, the gaggle of girls who were to dance with her threw in the towel.
Instead of giving up, the 9-year-old developed a new routine – one she could perform by herself.
"I learned that you can do anything if you really try and set your mind to it," Chiara says.
Her resiliency, her dad Larry says, has been shaped and nurtured by her three-year involvement with The Self Esteem Academy, a non-profit group of volunteers who are hoping to instill a stronger sense of self-worth in young people in the Eglinton and Oakwood Aves. community.
